Wood Recycling volunteers wanted
Emmaus St Albans recently launched a wood recycling business which targets businesses eg construction firms, businesses who produce wood packaging waste who have to pay to dispose of it. Rather than paying a skip company to remove the waste these companies pay Emmaus – usually a cheaper rate – to collect their wood waste. Emmaus then sort out the waste reusing wood in their workshop to make products for sale eg bird tables or planters, sell good sized lengths or sheets of wood to the public, sell as firewood or as a last resort take the wood to the local chipper who in turn send the wood to be burnt in electricity generating power stations. Thus no wood collected goes to landfill.
Emmaus are looking for volunteers to assist with collections and sorting and selling the collected wood The collections are mainly from building sites and involve going out with a the driver and one other volunteer or Emmaus Companion to help load and unload their transit-sized vehicle. The work is not too physically demanding but volunteers will need to be reasonably fit. Volunteers will be provided with an induction and the necessary protective clothing to work safely while collecting. Minimun time commitment for volunteers is half a day.
For volunteers with driving licences there are opportunities to drive, our 3.5t transit sized vehicle. Also opportunuties to swork in the workshop and obtain Health and Safety qualifications.
The St Albans Emmaus wood recycling business is based on the award winning Brighton and Hove Wood recycling project
Emmaus offers the chance to become part of a feiendly supportive team. As the business grows there may be opportunities to move into paid employment within the charity.
Emmaus wood recycling is an equal opportunites employer.
